Jenna has been choreographing since high school. Her college senior thesis, “(noun)” explores differing and separate systems, all having an underlying connection as a whole. The multiple systems showed visual design, individuals within community, femininity, and diverse movement qualities. I was interested in working with an all female cast because I wanted to make something that showed how beautiful and strong women are. I questioned what it looked like to see someone investigate a feeling that is very internal. I was playing with what it means to really look at people and dancers, and what it looks like for them to put on a show. The dancers are being seen but they are also the ones seeing the audience so the watching can also be considered as a show in its own way. Seeing is a two-way street but in dance it is often only thought of as the audience seeing the performers. Each time they did the piece they were actively developing their performance and creating a different experience than before by going deeper into their individual explorations of each system.
